I cant believe in the Year of our Lord 2016 someone is actually panning Suicide Squad for hiring a Japanese woman to play a Japanese character.

What?

It sounds like that tweet is criticizing the stereotyping of the Japanese and Latino characters, not the fact that the actors are actually Japanese and Latino.

Yeah sure, but another post perfectly summarized why Chato is still an important character. Non-white people are often perceived as immoral or with a different idea of morality/an unacceptable one, but Chato realized his wrongs and gave himself up. He decided that his powers were bad, but during the movie he learns to do good with them. He learns to save people. And that’s not a stereotype.
There is this gold standard idea of how to portray PoC that’s basically often saying they should act a certain way(most of the time the classical idea of white), before they are good portrayal. I’m not here at all for respectability politics.
See while the Latinx gang member is a stereotype there are indeed Latinx gang members in real life. There are also ex gang members and showing that someone who used to be a “bad guy” can change so drastically and know who they are and what they have done, but still try to do better and never become that person again? That’s not a stereotype that is showing that they are human and redeemable.

What’s a lot more concerning is that people never said ex gang member cause he’s only a member in the flashbacks and that people really couldn’t see beyond his past. His entire demeanor during the movie except for flashbacks is calm and non violent, he’s also suffering and carrying what he did with him, but no one wants to acknowledge that at all.

Then Katana who even though she didn’t have a lot of screentime I really felt the fact that she is in touch with her heritage. She speaks English. Flag knows she does, but no one asks her to. Karen said that she as a Japanese American fell in love with Katana because she felt a connection.

I’m not Japanese but I can sympathize with that. We Ghanaians have so many interesting rituals and stories I would love to see portrayed in mainstream media.

Yes stereotypes are harmful, but only if they override the humanity of the characters this film is all about their humanity and the fact that they have emotions and are aware of their grey morality.

What’s a lot more harmful is when people come along a film like this and can’t see beyond the stereotype.
